/ {& I+ t2 j4 ?) _ A& t* @The Bent Pyramid outside Cario ______ ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid.# O5 w3 L# |2 `/ ~1 D+ V, \9 p
A. has been believed to have been+ _. u x& h) @6 D! h
B. was believed to be8 n3 S8 m; j8 @3 r
C. is believed to have been! w/ Y* \# T( ~9 k
D. is believed to be
( f7 {9 I/ A$ d' L, m, U
Like many multiple-choice questions, a poor range of answers. You're right that D is just as good as C. The extra perfect tense doesn't add anything: it doesn't put it further back in time, or anything like that. We could say either. (entangledbank, London)。

1. The Hexen pepper-box handgun first appeared in 2013, and is believed to be the first attempt to create a viable firearm with a 3D printer." }- v: F- ~: Y- U" j! A+ P5 X

9 a/ X7 _! Q; w/ E+ a- ~$ ]6 l5 U# Q5 C+ F3 d W# G+ l7 N
Anteriority expressed by the perfect when the preterite not available的一个小节下面提到了下面这样的对应:
- g8 J% G, @" n4 k! k9 pHe died in 1806. ~ He is believed to have died in 1806. (CaGEL, p159)
+ d4 @! r: Z& a!
1 z2 O+ ]6 A* O) h9 p*He dies in 1806. ~ *He is believed to die in 1806.' N/ T6 m4 S6 O# Z5 k
$ |5 x5 \' S; U: l
It <is>/<was> ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid. 如果是按照上面出题人的逻辑,这里是非用was不可的,对应过来就是is believed to have been。 Brahms is/was the last great representative of German classicism. (CGEL, p182)就明确标记的is/was都可以。既然It is ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid. It is believed to be ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid. It is the rose which inspired the song. It is believed to be the rose which inspired the song.了。% {& j; Y; g8 S0 @+ a: K- a2 u# H% Y
