Now the World Health Organization is asking for your help to rename monkeypox. It said the current name encourages harmful stigma. Though* the symptoms of the virus include a fever and a rash that forms blisters, it's disproportionately infecting men who're having sex with men. Our Europe Regional Editor Paul Mars told us how monkeypox originally got its name.
0 g6 L! r* _2 H7 H' cWhat happened was there were a bunch of laboratory monkeys in Denmark, and scientists there identified the virus in those monkeys and, somehow the name stuck - which really is unfair because lots of animals are far worse spreaders of this virus; in fact the worst spreaders are of rodents, so if you really wanted to pin the virus on an animal, much better to have let monkeys out of it. You could have called it Ratpox, or maybe Mousepox.
