The Bent Pyramid outside Cario ______ ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid.
/ z; |3 d! @' H: ?8 UA. has been believed to have been4 X$ }- Q, S7 K7 `9 M
B. was believed to be/ Z7 A0 |2 i3 }8 |6 y |
C. is believed to have been
1 k2 \. n- [! y8 {# ], ?3 GD. is believed to be
$ f1 F( B) E, S1 |5 M( P* G/ M0 b: O0 y+ N C7 g5 e3 G
Like many multiple-choice questions, a poor range of answers. You're right that D is just as good as C. The extra perfect tense doesn't add anything: it doesn't put it further back in time, or anything like that. We could say either. (entangledbank, London)。 $ u. D7 c% v" o. j

当时我放了两个例证:- T3 J. A( p( X- c$ r2 q2 | d
1. The Hexen pepper-box handgun first appeared in 2013, and is believed to be the first attempt to create a viable firearm with a 3D printer.- r- Q& f( Q* _3 ]- D& _5 N
2. This is believed to be the first TV ad which portrayed two gays as an ordinary couple. (FORBES: Advertising Helped Bring Gay Rights Into The Mainstream)6 ]+ y3 a/ p* j4 ^+ l7 s6 P0 B3 E
0 ~( A- J# d. g( ?" b5 k我个人的意见是这样的:: I6 e/ G) U' | V( a; U
" n% |! R% @/ @, i( F
Anteriority expressed by the perfect when the preterite not available的一个小节下面提到了下面这样的对应:
2 X7 J* f. ?9 q8 g, J/ {He died in 1806. ~ He is believed to have died in 1806. (CaGEL, p159)& P: G4 ~2 B$ W$ Y; X; f+ \
也就是说died和to have died意思上是对应的,我们自然也不说:$ U0 |7 n( D" D/ Q
*He dies in 1806. ~ *He is believed to die in 1806.# }7 ^# {+ h6 x+ q2 G& V8 @
9 @$ }3 g* O1 f8 p0 F
It <is>/<was> ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid. 如果是按照上面出题人的逻辑,这里是非用was不可的,对应过来就是is believed to have been。 Brahms is/was the last great representative of German classicism. (CGEL, p182)就明确标记的is/was都可以。既然It is ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid. It is believed to be ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid. It is the rose which inspired the song. It is believed to be the rose which inspired the song.了。8 Y7 w8 Y( d5 |1 }5 L) d3 p

. |4 {: O& O; s0 EIt is the rose which inspired the song. ~ It is believed to be the rose which inspired the song.+ k L4 B$ d5 m; d, `: o
It was the rose which inspired the song. ~ It is believed to have been the rose which inspired the song.+ p: n9 b% u( H: t
