The Bent Pyramid outside Cario ______ ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid.4 w7 E& W# G# t, T% m ~; m
A. has been believed to have been
0 C3 \! D4 N; H2 x+ ~/ C% aB. was believed to be
~4 [9 u% V9 U0 f7 P# O1 H2 B" G* sC. is believed to have been' l+ ]3 H' p& L7 F' c, F
D. is believed to be2 C9 Z3 X. P# S# w! x0 e( p
Like many multiple-choice questions, a poor range of answers. You're right that D is just as good as C. The extra perfect tense doesn't add anything: it doesn't put it further back in time, or anything like that. We could say either. (entangledbank, London)。 L8 p7 T, I# _. |7 H6 E6 l

1. The Hexen pepper-box handgun first appeared in 2013, and is believed to be the first attempt to create a viable firearm with a 3D printer.4 }6 Y+ V) t- `% i

# O9 E, O) v5 C* C1 C! o+ z% {: Y5 Z# A! @" P4 o: F: N- E
Anteriority expressed by the perfect when the preterite not available的一个小节下面提到了下面这样的对应:/ i7 r2 W3 P7 W( K
He died in 1806. ~ He is believed to have died in 1806. (CaGEL, p159)$ E+ }6 X4 u0 H7 r) C) n
+ v/ s. o9 O% w9 ]9 r; h*He dies in 1806. ~ *He is believed to die in 1806.
' J8 O2 o. A$ w( n" `3 j# |2 V% s! |) K5 J; z+ z# b5 i1 Y
It <is>/<was> ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid. 如果是按照上面出题人的逻辑,这里是非用was不可的,对应过来就是is believed to have been。 Brahms is/was the last great representative of German classicism. (CGEL, p182)就明确标记的is/was都可以。既然It is ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid. It is believed to be ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid. It is the rose which inspired the song. It is believed to be the rose which inspired the song.了。4 j8 J/ F) c( F: z+ a( R
3 ^7 E! Z% k) W' E% |% \7 P8 q% L换句话说:
6 m: y' w2 b _2 i: u( P! ?. a' aIt is the rose which inspired the song. ~ It is believed to be the rose which inspired the song.1 i! k, D- G( O% E" F! d+ h
