+ F v& R5 q- b# p" `The Bent Pyramid outside Cario ______ ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid.
; c0 Q9 i, R( L3 a0 J6 U3 }A. has been believed to have been0 u7 \4 }+ d* P4 w2 w- k( Z
B. was believed to be Q: }5 k! C6 w: q) B# r* S
C. is believed to have been
/ z* Q# F7 N9 N7 V" V# ND. is believed to be$ v, f# O1 v1 o8 M1 s O. h* E
* @- ]0 X3 f! @: V4 d' R) J2 j
Like many multiple-choice questions, a poor range of answers. You're right that D is just as good as C. The extra perfect tense doesn't add anything: it doesn't put it further back in time, or anything like that. We could say either. (entangledbank, London)。

1. The Hexen pepper-box handgun first appeared in 2013, and is believed to be the first attempt to create a viable firearm with a 3D printer.

Anteriority expressed by the perfect when the preterite not available的一个小节下面提到了下面这样的对应:& ~4 E; W6 H% ]8 y0 f& T
He died in 1806. ~ He is believed to have died in 1806. (CaGEL, p159)/ K4 N7 ?: E/ G) ^! s
也就是说died和to have died意思上是对应的,我们自然也不说:% Z3 j; q4 j' Y1 K; x6 i9 X
*He dies in 1806. ~ *He is believed to die in 1806.' y& {. i; c7 Z1 V4 f' W; T4 }
9 K. d. \- F; P$ X不过如果把die这样的达成动词换做是be这样的状态动词,情况或许会有不同:4 _' W6 w4 D5 N: }% l9 f: }
It <is>/<was> ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid. 如果是按照上面出题人的逻辑,这里是非用was不可的,对应过来就是is believed to have been。 Brahms is/was the last great representative of German classicism. (CGEL, p182)就明确标记的is/was都可以。既然It is ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid. It is believed to be ancient Egypt’s first attempt to build a smooth-side pyramid. It is the rose which inspired the song. It is believed to be the rose which inspired the song.了。: @! |2 i, G0 ?9 ]
. }# U# \' U/ {8 r% e3 x换句话说:6 U+ y1 E+ o h
It is the rose which inspired the song. ~ It is believed to be the rose which inspired the song.0 d: h+ y7 F, G1 ]0 l
