14世纪中期，declaren，“解释，阐明，使清晰”；14世纪后期，“用言辞表明，明确陈述，宣布，公告”，源自古法语declarer“解释，阐明”，或直接源自拉丁语declarare“使清晰，揭示，披露，宣布”，由de-,这里可能是一个强调前缀（见de-) + clarare“澄清”组成，源自clarus“清晰”（见clear（形容词））。
从15世纪中期开始，“断言，肯定”。不及物动词“表明自己的想法或意图”始于1840年。相关词汇：Declared；declaring。
