这段中的 ... 5m a day 是什么意思？不可能是单日全球新增500万把？It may mean "million" here.
Sometimes English speakers will say "Ok, I'll give you 5g for that car"; g meaning "grand", slang for 1,000; so 5G is 5,000 dollars.But I wouldn't say it's common to say "5m perday" for "5 million per day". It's perfectly understandable when you have read the entire context, though.

but at times one can still not make head or tail of it, no matter how many times one reads it.

I must admit I was a bit surprised that such abbreviation could appear in a piece of writing that is supposed to be formal. The English language is deteriorating for sure, so is journalism nowadays. Everything is becoming fastfood-ish.
Be that as it may, I would suggest that we as learners should stick to our ground and try our best o use formal and proper English; the least of that are spellings and punctuation marks.
