You may have
nodding friends
all over the world,
but how many
of them
can be counted as
your confidants?
Always see
what your friends
attract you
when you first meet,
then you can
associate without resentment
till you are old.
Living by the river,
you know
how fish swim.
Living by a mountain,
you know
how birds chirp.
The water of
mountain streams,
rises fast,
and recedes just as fast.
Inconstancy,
is the mark
of a petty man's
heart.

You friends won't have reasons for resentment if you always treat them just like when you first meet.

Fickle is the heart of a petty man, just like the water of a mountain stream, which recedes just as fast as it rises.
